What To Expect When Working With a Restoration Company

When unexpected water damage occurs, whether from a burst pipe, backed-up drain, sump pump failure cleanup, water leak in a wall, or basement flood cleanup, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. Knowing what to do after water damage can make all the difference.

Our goal is to protect your home and belongings with a white-glove approach that prioritizes your peace of mind. We remove moisture safely, dry out water damage thoroughly, document everything with precision, and help you get back to normal as quickly as possible. This guide walks you through the process step by step so you know exactly what to expect at every stage of the restoration journey.

1. The Dry-Out & Mitigation Process (What Happens First)

Water Damage Assessment

An IICRC-certified technician assesses all impacted areas with tools to find hidden water.

A full scope of affected flooring, walls, cabinets, and structure is documented.

Stop the Source

If needed, a plumber or other specialist is brought in to stop the water from entering your home.

Containment & Protection

Plastic barriers or temporary walls are set up to contain moisture and prevent it from spreading to undamaged parts of your home.

Flooring, furniture, and personal belongings are protected.

Remove Standing Water

Standing water is extracted using commercial pumps and vacuums, removing hundreds of gallons in hours rather than days.

Dehumidifiers, air movers, and specialty drying equipment are strategically placed throughout the affected areas.

Daily Monitoring

A technician returns daily to record moisture readings until your floors, walls, and structural materials reach industry-standard dry levels (typically 15% moisture content or less).

You’ll never have to wonder what is happening with your home.

Drying Complete

Once dry, the equipment is removed, and a detailed completion report is prepared for your insurance carrier. This report can include moisture readings from start to finish, photos of the affected areas, a summary of equipment used, and documentation of the drying timeline.

2. The Pack-Out & Contents Care Process

If your belongings are at risk, we take extra care to protect what matters to you:

Pack-Out

Items are carefully inventoried, photographed, and moved offsite or into a climate-controlled area of your home.

Contents Cleaning/Storage

Belongings may be cleaned, deodorized, or stored during reconstruction.

Pack-In

Once repairs are complete, your items are turned and placed back in your home.

This ensures your belongings are protected while your home is being restored.

3. The Reconstruction Process

Once your home is fully dried, reconstruction begins:

Scope & Estimate

Your restoration partner prepares a rebuild estimate, often using Xactimate (the same system your insurance uses). This ensures pricing consistency and helps prevent disputes with your insurance company.

Selection of Materials

You choose all your preferred flooring, paint, cabinets, trims, and other finishes.

Permits & Scheduling

We pull all required permits and schedule the work.

Repairs & Build-Back

Demo areas are rebuilt (drywall, paint, flooring, cabinets, etc.)

Final Walkthrough

You sign off once everything is restored to pre-loss condition or better.

4. Working With Insurance

As your trusted restoration partner, we become your advocate through the insurance claim process. We handle the documentation and communication so you can focus on your family. Our team coordinates directly with your insurance carrier to make sure nothing falls through the cracks while you maintain control as the policyholder.

We help by:

  • Documenting the loss for your adjuster
  • Providing daily moisture logs & photos
  • Communicating directly with the carrier
  • Using approved pricing software (like Xactimate)
  • Clarifying what is and isn’t covered

How To Choose the Right Mitigation Partner

When a loss occurs, choosing the right partner matters. Here’s what to ask for:

What to Look For Why It Matters
Certificate of Insurance (COI) Confirms they’re properly insured and protects you as the homeowner.
IICRC Certification Shows they follow nationally recognized drying and safety standards.
No “Balance Billing” Practices Ensures they aren’t coming after you for costs the insurance carrier denies or delays.
Local Presence & Reputation Faster response times and better accountability.
Clear Scope Before Work Starts You know what’s being done and why.

If a contractor won’t provide these things, it’s a red flag.
